Microsoft Windows fue creado por Bill Gates. El nombre se debe a una familia de distribuciones para diversos dispositivos (PC, smartphone, servidores y sistemas empotrados) , desarrollados y vendidos por Microsoft. Desde un punto de vista técnico, estas no son sistemas operativos, si no que contienen uno (MS-DOS, o el más actual cuyo núcleo es Windows NT). 

Microsoft introdujo un entorno operativo denominado Windows como un complemento para MS-DOS en respuesta al creciente interés en las interfaces gráficas de usuario. Microsoft llegó a dominar el mercado mundial de computadoras personales, superando a Mac OS.
